The last mile isn’t a line haul.

A full truckload runs the same route, to the same dock, every day. The last mile is a different beast — every stop, every service, every job can be different. That variability is why it can’t be run on if-then rules. It has to be intelligently automated.

Why the last mile breaks the old model

Long-haul and middle-mile have time on their side. A dispatcher can watch, react, and replan, because the route repeats and the destination is a warehouse with a dock and a known procedure. That’s what a traditional TMS is built for, and it’s valuable for that.

The last mile has none of that. The number of ways a day can be arranged is combinatorial — practically infinite. To route it well by hand, you’d have to move faster than a person can, or hire more people than you can afford to manage. There isn’t a middle option. That’s the gap Intelligent Automation fills.

It takes on the work people used to hold in their heads

Most last-mile operations run on tribal knowledge — the stuff a good dispatcher just knows. Automating that means taking real responsibility for every variable they’d account for: arrival and departure windows, service timing, multiple and changing services, picking up in one place and dropping in another. We built a configurable capability engine that handles all of it, well beyond “get from A to B faster.”

Do it halfway and you get ham-handed results — the kind that send people back in to redo the work the system was supposed to take off their plate. Or worse, the deliverable to your customer quietly gets dumbed down because the system couldn’t handle the real conditions. Intelligent Automation reads how you already work, connects to your sources, and makes the call a person would have made.

Here’s the operating principle: the first time something new shows up, fine — it’s a manual tweak. The second time, you put a rule in, and it never happens a third time.

A store that doesn’t open until five. A driver who’s faster on a certain service. You capture it once and it’s handled forever. No one touches it again. That’s what “set it and forget it” actually means here — the system gets more complete every time you use it, instead of drifting back toward manual.

Agnostic by design

We didn’t build for parcel, or towing, or lawn care. We built for the generic case: a person going to a place, with or without items, to do something. Every vertical names its data differently, but underneath, those things all relate to each other the same way. We put a thin layer over the top that maps your language to the generic model — which is why we move from one vertical to the next without rebuilding.

A human asset has characteristics: faster or slower, certain expertise, can or can’t lift fifty pounds. A truck has capabilities: a ramp, a lift gate, a winch, the right fluids, the range, the capacity. An address has requirements. Name them whatever your industry names them — the engine reasons about them the same way.
